You can’t improve a wheelbarrow . . . or can you? Oregon inventor, Mel Lulay, has done just that, with the new Simply Dump It wheelbarrow handle accessory. Lulay states, “The Simply Dump It is a new design of attachment that can be installed on most wheelbarrows to improve the grip and control of the wheelbarrow and allow the user to more accurately and easily place the contents of the load, without releasing their grip on the handles.” No more awkward hand-reversal maneuvers when you are lifting a load to dump! This ergonomically designed accessory has a slightly elevated grip, with a pivot point, that allows the user to move, lift and dump the load while never letting go of the handle.

Working in the construction business for almost two-decades gave Lulay years of practical use with the wheelbarrow. Lulay shares, “The idea for the Simply Dump It was conceived when I was pouring concrete — one wheelbarrow at a time. One day, while changing my hand grip when I was lifting a load, the load shifted and spilled, and not into the forms where it was meant to be. I thought there has to be a better way.” Lulay woke at 1:00 am and began fashioning his new idea out of cardboard. By 3:00 am the basic working design was complete.

Lulay took his cardboard model to a metal fabrication plant and had a prototype pair made from metal and installed them on his own wheelbarrow. The results were fantastic. Control of the load was finally achieved. The highlight is the pivot that allows the wheelbarrow to be extended into the upright position, dumping the contents in the place it was meant to go, without letting go of the handles. Even dumping a partial load and moving to a second location to dump the balance of the load can now be achieved without ever changing the hand position on the grips.

The next step was to prepare the Simply Dump It design for manufacture. After visiting with the patent attorney, Lulay began the process of finding a mold maker to create his design for production. This journey that took Lulay from California to Washington, the project was awarded to a mold-maker and manufacturer in Oregon. Lulay says, “We are excited and pleased that the Simply Dump It wheelbarrow handle accessory has been developed and is being made right here in Oregon. We are also proud to say that our product is ‘Made in the USA’.”

Lulay, owner of MAS Un Limited, goes on to explain, “The design was finalized after weeks of brainstorming with engineers, the mold –maker, support staff and family. The team worked together to create the strongest, most durable, eye-appealing unit that had a comfortable and secure grip while handling.”

Strength and durability testing was done to determine the Simply Dump It would stand-up to daily use with heavy loads such as concrete, sod, dirt or rock while easily handling the simplest of jobs around the backyard like trimmings, bark dust and garden debris. Even jobs like disposing of the leftovers from the livestock area are made easier when maneuvering, tight-cornering and unloading.
